I have always loved new experiences and feelings. New  smells, tastes and views are always fascinating. That's why I have tried to travel whenever it has been possible. 

When I got my driving licence and bought my first car, we started to drive around. We spent a couple of months every summer during the late sixties visiting countries in Europe. Cars we used vere not so good but at that time cars were still so simple that we were able to repair their problems by ourselves. We lived in a tent and sometimes just in a sleeping bag under bushes in a city park. Travelling was not so expensive, gasoline was cheap and food was growing along the roads. One could buy eggs and other foodstuffs directly from the farmers. 

I learned the lust for new experiences during those years and it still exists in me. I have continued to look for new countries and new cultures. I collected quite a lot of them during my years as a Member of Parliament and Government. Also my years as President and CEO of PT Finland and Sonera gave a lot of possibilities to see new geographical areas.

I have visited 75 todays's UN member countries. UN has altogether 190 member countries in September 2002. Visiting those 75 means in practice, that I have  put my foot on the ground which is a part of those countries today. Of course all of them did not exist at the time I was there.
